How the AI score works, and who wrote it

A language model rated these, not a test lab. Every score from 1 to 10 is an AI assessment of how good the product is against the other 18 in this comparison, formed from the specifications we verified plus the published lab reviews and owner reception found while researching each one. Nobody at Slopsheets listened to, wore or plugged in any of it.

It weighs the things a spec table cannot show: how a product is actually reviewed, how well the software works, build quality, and what you get for the money. That is deliberate. An earlier version of this column was pure arithmetic on the table and it ranked a bundle of cheap boxes above a class-leading single unit, because counting hardware is not the same as judging it.

Treat it as an informed starting point and read the sourced comparison, not as a verdict. The score is relative to this comparison only, so it means nothing across categories, and it carries no price, star rating or review count. Every specification behind it is sourced and checked; the score on top of them is opinion.

Frequently asked questions

What actually matters when choosing an instant camera?

The film format, first and forever. It fixes the print size, the cost of every shot and which cameras you can ever swap to. After that, focus decides how many close-ups come out sharp, and a hybrid screen decides whether you pay for the misses.

Why do the weights in this sheet not all measure the same thing?

Makers weigh differently. Fujifilm quotes its AA and CR2 cameras without batteries, while Polaroid and every camera with a built-in battery are weighed with it. For a like-for-like figure, add about 46 grams for two AA cells and about 92 grams for four.

What does preview before printing mean?

The camera shoots digitally to a screen and only prints the shot you choose, like the Instax Mini Evo, Mini LiPlay+, Wide Evo and Leica Sofort 2. Pure analog cameras expose the film directly, so every press of the shutter costs a print.

Is zone focus worse than autofocus?

Not by much at normal distances. Zone systems pick from two to four preset ranges, which covers people and landscapes well. They fall short on close-ups between ranges, where a true autofocus lens like the Polaroid I-2's LiDAR system lands more sharp shots.

Which film gives the biggest picture?

Polaroid i-Type and 600 film, at 79 by 79 mm of image, edges out Instax Wide at 99 by 62 mm on area. Both are more than twice the image of an Instax Mini print, and the Polaroid Go's tiny 47 by 46 mm frame is the smallest here.
